IT Home On October 7, according to tech media neowin’s report today, Microsoft and OpenAI have been sued by American local media such as Emmerich Newspapers. The plaintiffs claim that these two tech giants deliberately stole tens of thousands of copyrighted articles for the training of AI models.

The plaintiff pointed out that Microsoft and OpenAI have earned billions of dollars from the stolen content, yet the publishers have not received a single cent. The institution that filed the lawsuit also believes that the two companies bypassed restrictions such as payment walls and did not obtain authorization.
According to IT Home, the plaintiff in this lawsuit — Emeryce Newspapers is a large private newspaper group located in Mississippi, USA. It also serves users in Louisiana and Arkansas. Other plaintiffs in this lawsuit include Ojai Media, Coopwood Publishing, Coopwood Magazine, Coopwood Media Group, and Coopwood Newspapers.
Furthermore, the aforementioned plaintiffs believe that Microsoft and OpenAI have violated the Copyright Act and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. They wish for the two companies to pay damages and seek a court order to remove the infringing training data from the models.
