The hardware convergence of personal computers and artificial intelligence is reaching a new milestone. At a Tech Week event held in San Francisco this Wednesday, Microsoft officially revealed the full configurations and pricing of the new Surface Laptop Ultra laptop and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box workstation, both equipped with Nvidia RTX Spark chips.
In terms of the product lineup and pricing, the newly launched Surface Laptop Ultra offers two base models, starting at $2,600 and $3,700 respectively, and users can further upgrade memory and storage according to their needs, with the top-spec version priced at up to $5,900. Microsoft said that the highest-end configuration is already sold out following the launch. In addition, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box workstation, aimed at professional developers, starts at $6,000 and comes preloaded with a full suite of Microsoft development tools including VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL, and PowerShell 7.
In terms of hardware design and local AI capabilities, the core highlight of these devices is the ability to run various AI models and agents locally for free. With dedicated CPU and GPU resources, a unified memory architecture, and a top-tier cooling system optimized for heavy workloads, the new models demonstrate powerful local computing support. Beyond its headline AI and agent development support, thanks to its powerful graphics performance, Microsoft promises that these Surface computers can also fully handle diverse scenarios such as content creation, video processing, and large-scale gaming.
On the operating system front, Microsoft simultaneously introduced a fully re-engineered Windows 11 and added a key feature called "Execution Containers." Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella pointed out at the event that this feature is designed to provide AI agents with a safer and more convenient sandboxed isolation environment, and that it will be made available to all Windows 11 users in the future. Nadella emphasized that relying on large models alone is far from enough; the core of future operating systems lies in providing an orchestration layer that can integrate multiple models, context, external memory, and action spaces.
To attract the developer community, Microsoft launched a strong marketing offensive, offering trade-in users a discount of up to $1,000 when they trade in a MacBook Pro. Meanwhile, other major PC makers are also accelerating their moves: on the same day, Dell officially announced the detailed specifications of the much-anticipated Dell XPS16Creator Edition PC, priced at $3,800 with pre-orders now open, and shipping is expected to officially begin in late October (10月下旬).
