The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) recently announced the results of the new round of top-level domain applications, with this round receiving 1615 applications from 481 applicants worldwide. In this wave of applications, AI-related domains have become the core focus of competition among tech giants.
Among them, companies such as Meta and OpenAI are actively competing for the .agent domain, while domains such as .agi, .asi, and .superintelligence have also attracted applications from several heavyweight companies. To further enhance brand recognition, OpenAI submitted 15 top-level domain applications in total, while Meta submitted 21 applications.
Companies Position Their Brand Domains, but Official Activation Still Requires Waiting
In addition to domains targeting the general market, this round of applications also included 345 exclusive corporate brand domains. These include .facebook and .meta applied for by Meta, .chatgpt applied for by OpenAI, and .claude applied for by Anthropic. In the future, these exclusive domains can be used directly for product pages and official services.
Although tech companies' attention to the domain system has increased significantly, submitting an application is only the first step. ICANN stated that the top-level domain applications submitted in this round will not enter the official activation phase before next year, and the relevant review and approval processes will continue to move forward.
