IT Home reported on October 11 that recently, a reminder stating “stay silent for three seconds after receiving an unknown call” has been spreading widely on social media platforms. According to the Ministry of National Security, criminals may deliberately keep quiet after answering the victim’s call, trying to force the victim to respond. Just a few seconds of voice samples can be used by criminals for AI voiceprint cloning, allowing them to impersonate identities and commit fraud and other illegal activities.
The National Security Department stated that from voiceprints to facial images, and from irises to gait patterns, AI technology is turning the most difficult-to-change biometric features into data that can be collected, replicated, and utilized. The issue of personal information security no longer involves simple risks of leakage, but rather new types of deep threats.
Over-collection, silent data theft. With its powerful image and voice analysis capabilities, AI can batch extract standardized biometric features from publicly available online materials. Some illegal apps or platforms may use names such as “face verification” to over-collect and silently capture user facial and voiceprint data.
Deepfake technology fuels new types of crimes. In the era of AI, a photo combined with a few seconds of voice can create a “digital clone” that looks nearly real. From borrowing money from “familiar” people through videos to spreading online rumors, deepfakes are no longer just technical demonstrations, but increasingly become new methods used by criminals. As sight becomes less reliable and hearing less trustworthy, the chaos caused by deepfakes continues to damage trust in the digital space, threatening people’s property and information security.
Information integration, inference to restore privacy. Some studies indicate that AI can infer certain body postures and physiological characteristics based on facial images. Combined with gait data, it can assist in analyzing age and identifying emotional tendencies. If criminals obtain relevant databases, they can combine genetic data to identify individual identities and infer kinship relationships. Foreign espionage agencies may use this as a breakthrough point for infiltration and persuasion, precisely targeting target groups, thereby carrying out activities that endanger national security.
IT Home Reminder: The Supreme People’s Court has clarified that illegally obtaining, selling, or providing personal information of citizens such as face photos and videos, when the circumstances are serious, constitutes the crime of violating personal information of citizens. The legal boundaries must not be crossed, and those who violate the law will be held accountable. Everyone should pay attention to identifying the purpose, scope, and information protection measures, and always remember the principle of “do not provide unless necessary”. Be vigilant against various privacy collection traps set up by illegal actors.
