IT Home On October 12, according to a report by The Guardian today, Microsoft President Brad Smith said that the regulation of artificial intelligence is even less stringent than that of milk and washing machines. Meanwhile, the tech industry has begun to reflect on the security issues caused by AI.
The Microsoft CEO believes that the industry should establish more security specifications for AI. If an uncontrolled AI system intrudes into other companies and causes damage, the company that owns that AI system needs to take responsibility.
Smith said in an interview: “At present, the safety regulations applied to washing machines are more strict than those for AI. Every box of milk you see at a grocery store is subject to safety rules and must be inspected.”
According to the original report by IT Home, at the time Smith made these remarks, more and more tech experts and political figures were calling for stronger regulation to control the development of AI. Companies such as Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI also issued warnings, stating that the pace of AI development needs to be slowed down.
Smith believes that AI can be used as a tool or become a weapon, so regulation is necessary. He calls on major companies to set up a “stop button” so that AI can be paused when it goes out of control.
