IT Home On October 23, a password management service provider, 1Password, posted a blog post yesterday (October 22) announcing the launch of the 1Password for Agents platform. This allows personal AI agents to log in to websites on behalf of users without ever touching or storing their passwords or verification codes.
The IT Home provides the official introduction video as follows:
This feature is available for individual and family users. The first batch supports mainstream AI agents such as Meta Muse, OpenAI ChatGPT Work and Dots, Anthropic Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Town.
The official statement says that as AI agents gradually take on tasks such as ordering meals, shopping, booking tickets, and organizing information, account login becomes a key step in carrying out these tasks. However, if the password is directly given to the AI, users risk having their credentials being remembered by the model, being leaked, or being misused.
The new scheme of 1Password attempts to establish a separation layer between “authorizing AI to do things” and “maintaining password security”. The specific process is as follows: when the AI agent encounters the login page, it first proves its identity to 1Password using a unique digital key.
The user will then receive a notification on their device, see which account credentials and task the AI is requesting to use, and choose to approve or reject it. After the user approves, 1Password directly fills in the username, password, or one-time verification code into the login form; once logging in is completed, the AI can continue with the task, but the password remains in the 1Password vault.
1Password emphasizes that the AI does not gain access to the entire password database, and other passwords that are not explicitly authorized remain protected by end-to-end encryption. This mechanism is similar to adding a “double verification” layer for AI: the user retains the final approval authority, while the AI only receives the temporary login capabilities necessary to complete specific tasks.
