IT Home On October 28, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on social media platform X on October 27 that robots will have a greater demand for memory than everything else on Earth, contradicting market views that humanoid robots don’t require much memory.
The Counterpoint analysis report states that by 2030, the demand for humanoid robots DRAM will increase 20 times, reaching 172,000 TB, and the memory capacity of each robot will double to 39 GB.
According to analyst Shay Boloor from Futurum Equities, if Tesla produces 10 million Optimus humanoid robots per year, with each robot having 72 GB of memory, the annual memory demand would be approximately 720 PB. He believes that using LPDDR instead of HBM will create greater sales opportunities for Samsung Memory and SK Hynix.
Musk also said that the computing needs of superintelligence will far exceed those of robots, but almost 100% of superintelligence computing will ultimately be carried out in deep space.
IT Home noticed that Micron’s CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, also said last month, around 2030, physical AI may become a major driver of memory and storage needs.
Regarding the production schedule, Musk said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call recently that the first batch of Optimus robot deliveries are scheduled for around the end of next year, and the Fremont production line will take at least another year to reach a capacity of 20,000 units per week.
