IT之家 news, October 31 — Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's head of core product and platform, announced in a post on the X platform today (October 31) that the ChatGPT account switching feature has launched on the web, iOS, andAndroid, with plans to bring it to desktop soon.
Sottiaux also teased thatthere will be more reveals over the next two days.
Citing OpenAI's official changelog, IT之家 reports that users can be logged into up to two accounts at the same time and switch between them quickly without logging out, though only one account can be active at any given moment.
For users who juggle a personal account and a company account, this update resolves a long-standing pain point with login switching. In the past, users who wanted to switch between their personal agent and work agent accounts often had to repeatedly log out and log back in; now they can switch between the two accounts simply via the account menu or “Settings — Switch accounts.”
OpenAI emphasizes that after switching accounts, chat history, memories, files, and settings all change according to the selected account, and workspaces belong only to the corresponding account. Accounts do not share conversation history, uploaded files, or memories with each other, nor are billing, subscriptions, or workspaces merged.
However, it's worth noting that switching accounts does not migrate chats from one account to another; if you want to use paid features on the new account, you still need a separate subscription.
As for usage rules, users may own more than two ChatGPT accounts, but at most two can be logged in simultaneously on the same device. If two accounts are already logged in, one must be signed out before a new account can be added; creating a second account itself is free of charge, and the new account defaults to the free plan.
On mobile, notifications are also supported according to each account's settings and device permissions. After a user taps a notification from another account, the app switches to that account and opens the relevant content, making it easy to promptly handle messages across different identities.
