ITHome October 31 news: According to Bloomberg, as the global memory chip supply shortage grows increasingly severe, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with Samsung Group executives in South Korea this afternoon (the 31st), and the two sides plan to further strengthen cooperation in memory chip supply and AI infrastructure construction.
According to a statement released by Samsung, Altman held talks this time in Yongin withabout 50 executivesfrom Samsung's electronics, financial, and biotechnology businesses. The two sides discussed AI's impact on the industry landscape, corporate decision-making, and business development over the next ten years.
Shortages of various memory products are putting pressure on the global electronics industry, and chip prices have risen sharply as a result. Demand for data center construction continues to grow, and competition among major operators for memory chips has further intensified. Five leading companies in the AI infrastructure field plan toinvest more than 3 trillion US dollars over the next few years(ITHome note: approximately 20.01 trillion RMB at current exchange rates), with memory chip spending accounting for roughly one-third of data centertotal spending。
The report notes that South Korea holds a leading position in advanced memory chip manufacturing, and the adoption of AI technology among local businesses and consumers is also accelerating. Since last year, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and AMD CEO Lisa Su haveeach visited South Korea twiceto strengthen supply chain cooperation. Several tech industry executives have previously warned that chip manufacturing capacity will struggle to meet growing market demand.
This meeting is also a continuation of the two sides' previous cooperation plans. According to the announced cooperation arrangements, Samsung will supply memory chips for OpenAI's "Stargate" infrastructure project, and the two sides will alsojointly build AI data centerswith cooperation covering offshore floating data centers. At the same time, Samsung is also accelerating the application of AI technology in its own businesses, covering R&D, manufacturing, marketing, and corporate operations.
