IT Home On October 16, according to a post by the tech media outlet Business Insider yesterday (October 15), it is reported that Google co-founder Sergey Brin said that the Gemini model is at a critical moment of “self-improvement”.
During the roundtable discussion held around the new Gemini 4 Argon model, Brin said that AI has begun to participate in creating its next-generation models. The Flash series of models launched by Google have already shown this trend, the company is “starting to ride the RSI treadmill.”
IT Home note: RSI stands for Recursive Self-Improvement. Literally translated, it means “recursive self-improvement”. That is, AI helps build stronger AI, thereby creating a “flying wheel effect” of accelerated iteration.
Google disclosed in its security report for Argon that some stages of the AI development process have been automated: The AI intelligence is capable of handling most of the production code writing and vulnerability fixes, but code changes still need to be manually reviewed before being submitted.
This judgment is not unique to Google. Anthropic and OpenAI have also stated that AI may be approaching the RSI phase. A report released by Gladstone AI this week indicates that most researchers from institutions such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and DeepMind believe that RSI could begin within 3 to 12 months.
However, RSI also raises safety concerns. Previously, AI researchers warned that if sufficient protective mechanisms are not in place, humans may gradually lose control over fast self-improvement technologies.
