Artificial intelligence agents (AI Agents) are trying to disrupt traditional online shopping models, but major traditional e-commerce platforms clearly do not intend to open their doors easily. Recently, a user posted on a social platform, reporting that Amazon is using technical measures to prevent the Grok Bot, an AI agent owned by Elon Musk, from performing order placement for users on its platform.
As an advanced AI agent capable of operating web pages and performing multi-step complex tasks on the cloud, Grok Bot has previously not only been deeply integrated into Tesla vehicles, but also acts as a substitute for users in completing the entire shopping process—from selecting products to checkout. This new form of “AI shopping on behalf of people” is regarded as a major impact on the underlying logic of traditional e-commerce. However, as its functions continue to expand, various platforms have begun to take defensive measures. In addition to the blockade of Grok Bot, Amazon has also blocked Meta’s Muse AI shopping intelligence, while Amazon itself is stepping up the development of its own AI shopping tools.
In response to users' complaints about being blocked from placing orders with the Grok Bot on the X platform, as well as the suggestion to introduce a “X Shop,” Musk publicly said that perhaps a company capable of competing directly with Amazon should be established. Although this statement is currently more of an impromptu response to platform restrictions, as the collision between AI agent technology and the moats of traditional giants intensifies, the new business ecosystem in the AI era has just begun.
