Disney to acquire parts of Character.AI for US$20 million and take on its core team

According to legal documents disclosed by Bloomberg, Disney has agreed to acquire some of Character.AI's assets for US$20 million and has offered jobs with total annual salaries of about US$60 million to at least 60 employees (the majority of its total workforce), and the vast majority of invited employees have now accepted the tentative offers.
This acquisition and talent absorption highlights the deep integration of vertical-domain technical teams by traditional entertainment giants amid the wave of artificial intelligence. Although the startup had a large and active user base, continuously rising operating costs along with potential litigation liabilities and regulatory pressure (such as the recent child safety investigations and related lawsuits it faced) ultimately weighed on its business.
This event reflects how the large-model and conversational AI race is rapidly diverging, with high compliance costs and financial pressure pushing some early unicorns' assets and core teams toward deep-pocketed giants, further concentrating industry resources at the top.
