OpenAI announced a major upgrade for its Google Chrome browser extension, officially bringing computer functionality into the mainstream browser environment. This update is available to users of all packages, and through deep integration of the browser context and operational permissions, it has enabled a transition from simple information retrieval to active task execution.
In terms of core functionality, the upgraded extension provides different capabilities in both Chat and Work modes. In Chat mode, the AI can automatically read and aggregate context information across multiple open Chrome tabs, directly extracting data from multiple web pages to generate analysis results. In Work mode, the tool has tab control capabilities, allowing direct execution of complex workflows such as downloading files, sending messages, filling out forms, and intelligent grouping of tabs within the browser.
At the same time, the sidebar interface fully integrates users' history and connected plugins, allowing parallel processing of text summaries, email writing, and cross-platform data reporting while browsing web pages.
Industry analysis suggests that as large models evolve from “dialogue responses” to “agent execution,” browsers are becoming a high-frequency core scenario for the implementation of AI agents. By enhancing control over native web workflows through extension programs, OpenAI not only reduces the operational barriers for filling complex forms and integrating multiple sources of information, but also indicates that AI assistants are deeply taking over the user’s desktop productivity cycle.
